The Russan scientist Oleg Losev discovered that diodes emitted light when a current went through them. In 1927 he published details about the first LED in a Russian magazine and patented it. Losevs work, however, stayed unnoticed. Therefore, it was only until 1962 that the LED really broke through. It was in that year that Nick Holonyah developed a working LED.
